The Bratz range of dolls have affected the sale of Mattel's leading fashion doll, Barbie. In 2004, sales figures showed that Bratz dolls were outselling Barbie dolls in the United Kingdom, although Mattel maintained that in terms of the numerator of dolls, clothes and accessories sold, Barbie remained the leading cast. In 2005, figures showed that sales of Barbie dolls had fallen by 30% in the United States, and by 18% worldwide, with lots of the drop presence attributed to the popularity of Bratz dolls.
In April 2005, MGA divertissement filed a lawsuit against Mattel, claiming that the "My Scene" line of Barbie dolls had copied the doe-eyed look of Bratz dolls. The lawsuit is currently pending in the court utilidor of California.
Mattel sued MGA pleasure for $500 million alleging that Bratz creator Carter Bryant was laboring for Mattel when he developed the suspicion for Bratz. On July 17, 2008, a federal jury ruled that the Bratz line was formed by Carter Bryant while he was operative for Mattel. But MGA said he hadn't extinct running for Mattel at the season. Mr Bryant's worked for Mattel twice and he said he designed them while he was in-at intervals jobs. The jury including ruled that MGA and its Chief Executive Officer Isaac Larian were liable for converting Mattel buildings for their own use and intentionally interfering with the contractual duties owed by Bryant to Mattel. On August 26, the jury establish that Mattel would have to be paid US $100 million in damages.
On December 3, 2008, U.S. District Judge Stephen Larson banned MGA from selling Bratz. He allowed the team to make headway selling the dolls until the winter holiday season ended. The ruling will be in effect on February 11, 2009 at the earliest; Mattel and MGA will meet in court on that juncture. As per the court standardization, after the end of the holiday season, MGA must remove, at its own cost, all the Bratz dolls from abundance shelves, including the reimbursement of the cost of the dolls and all shipping costs to its vendors and distributors.[18] The court gave exceptions for some toys if they are packaged separately from infringing toys. MGA has since stated that they are planning to folder an appeal.
in that the Bratz doll line has now pass forced to be taken off shelves, Mattel has staged a complete revamp in their purchasing strategy for their My Scene line of dolls. that involved refurbishing their authenticated My Scene World Wide Web documents and making all branding tangible closely associated with bratz.
